MELTDOWN 2001 - A FEW ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Further to my review of the Meltdown Festival in the previous issue, I would like to share with you some comments from fellow Frenchman Manuel Bienvenu, who also attended the Soupsongs concert, and whose opinion differed from mine in several respects. As his message was written in French, I will translate the main bits.

* "I didn't hate Brett Anderson as much as you did. I think not being a member of "the scene" made his version of 'Sea Song' more simple and direct. I liked the use of electronics and, contrary to what you wrote, I found the revamped chord structure - not at all simplified but modified and even enriched - quite interesting. Well, nothing fantastic, and their attitude was quite ridiculous, but for me this wasn't the worst moment of the evening".

* "I thought Julie Tippetts wasted some of the songs with what you called her "Centipede-like" stuff. For instance "Gharzbadegi" which had begun well (and by the way, you should have mentioned it as one of the songs which Karen Mantler sang on). I prefered Julie's more restrained interpretations, such as "Sight Of The Wind", which was truly revisited".

* "This is what I didn't like about the concert as a whole - most of the performers did a solo performance on top of the music, with little concern for the spirit of the pieces. Which meant neither "for" or "against", just a lack of relation between the interpretation of the song and what the song was about".
(Well, that's exactly why I thought Brett Anderson's rendition of 'Sea Song' was so poor and even insulting - AL)

* "You didn't mention Annie Whitehead's performance. Yet she played outstandingly, for instance on the intro to "Muddy Mouth"...".
(You're absolutely right. She played some mean trombone! - AL)

Do Caravan or In Cahoots ever play over here in the States? I know they
would do well in places like the Bottom Line in New York City. Just
wondering...

Recently saw Mike Keneally & Beer for Dolphins at the Bottom Line
excellent show in spite of the technical problems with Mike's guitar. Also I read where he will be performing 1 of his albums in its entirety with a large symphony orchestra. From what I read this is taking place
overseas, so if you see anything about this check it out. If you do not know who Keneally is he played with Zappa for quite a while, check out his website .

Subject: On certain archival releases

I have been into Canterbury music since 1970, own a lot of it and so class
myself as a fan and a semi-expert on the genre.

However, with the release this week of the two archive Soft Machine CD's 'Turn On Vol 1' and 'Turn On Vol 2', I feel that someone has to say something.

The sound quality of these two CD's, particularly Vol 2, is nothing short of shocking, and yet we are not informed anywhere on the cover that the quality is such (bearing in mind as well that the larger chain shops sell shrink-wrapped) and even worse, they are on sale at full price.

In the sleeve notes to Vol 1, it is  explained that the live recordings were 'made not only in unfavouarble conditionswith very basic equipment but in many cases only ever for private consumption' (in other words, someone's bootleg tape collection was raided to put these out), while on Vol 2's sleeve notes there is no mention of this factor at all.

OK, so the argument may go that only Softs fanatics will buy them anyway, but is this any way to go about maintaining the valuable historic name for quality music that this band has held over the years. The 'historical interest' card may be played, (and in the light of the 'Canterburied Archives' CD's and the miserable 'Deaf Man On The Corner' double, surely now overplayed) but if it's only for 'historical interest' it does beg the question 'why?' because music, even in such a context, is only enjoyable if you can actually hear all of what is going on - and in the case of these live recordings, you listen straining to find a decent excuse as to why you are getting little real enjoyment out of them - such an excuse is at best, dubious.

For me, these two CD's should not exist, even at mid-price; they do not do anyone any good (well, the musicians get their royalties, I suppose, so that's about the best you can say), and, if reviewers less charitable than me get their teeth into these, may even do more harm than good.

Such a view may well cause gasps of horror among the committed, but this is a personal opinion, and I would welcome other thoughts on the subject.

Andy Garibaldi.

[I must confess I haven't bought or heard the CDs you mention, but I agree with you that, in the case of archive documents with bad sound quality, potential buyers should be warned explicitly on the back cover - AL]

Dear Aymeric

Thanks for your account of the Meltdown Festival organised by Robert Wyatt.

I was triggered by your remarks about the 'song' 'This is the end'. I also have been puzzled by the origin of the song, until I discovered a full version of it on the legendary, Costello-produced first album by the Specials (1979). Remember that Robert was a ska enthousiastic at the time!

The track is actually called "You're wondering why" and composed by a Clement Seymour. As far as I'm aware this person was not a member of the Specials, which might imply that the original version was recorded by somebody else. Anybody got a clue?

Best wishes,
Jan van Driel

Hi Aymeric:

Thank you so much and keep up the great work.

Oh yeah, great liner notes on "PLAYTIME". That is one gorgeous set
of live recordings... it brings back many fine memories.

(I saw National Health in December of that tour in Toronto at a now sadly defunct but outstanding-in-its-day club called The Edge)

Thanks,
