That would be George (Nisar Ahmad) Khan... Cut an early free jazz session for ESP label with Peter Lemer, John Surman and the Colosseum rhythm section... In addition recorded with Arthur Brown, Pete Brown, Mirage (w guitarist Brian Godding) (on the legendary Compendium label that originally released "Hoppertunity Box" and "Cruel but Fair") and perhaps even more to the point, appears on Robert Wyatt's "Ruth is Stranger than Richard"

>Hillage as producer

Hillage's biggest production success has been for north african popster - Rachid Taha

Dear fellow Rattlers,

In addition to the acts already mentioned here, Steve also produced one or more records by The Charlatans (UK), Jazz Devils, Robyn Hitchcock, The Shamen and, most strikingly, Rachid Taha - a very interesting French-Algerian singer who marries raï music to techno, delivering the results in a way that makes him the Ian Dury of world dance. So there.

Happy hunting,

Hello all Wrattlers,

Noticing alot of people looking for Missing Pieces/N.H. recently and didn't realise that this was OOP. Is it truly out of print mon frere? The only thing I would suggest is to do an all out onslaught on the WWW. as there are probably tons of people who have it still in stock or by just calling all the local CD shops and have them check availability would also make sense as I use this method to run down hard to finds or end of life CD's.

Wayside/Cuneiform (CuneiWay@aol.com) might have it or simply write/call ESD in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the true dirt on the CD and who they might have sold copies to would also get results. A true bummer if it really is OOP.

I believe that 'End of an Ear' by Wyatt has been reissued BTW.

Saw a CD by the Softs called 'Middle Earth' for $25 which was in the Daevid A./K. Ayers period with a couple of long jams to end the CD...didn't get it but upon reinspection on the bin someone else scooped it up...Anybody on this wire ever heard of this selection? Seemed to be BBC and local recording material that was mastered to CD similar to the 'Canterburied Sounds' stuff.

I would like to mention to Bay Area, California residents that the Compact Disc Warehouse in Sunnyvale, CA has been getting alot of Cuneiform and related prog titles in their store of late...great prices too. I know there are a couple of Canterburians that go there cos I saw N.H.'s 'Complete' CD there in the used bin ($16.99) and a couple days later was gone as well as a bunch of Hopper titles (used). It's kinda cool to see how the power of all this electronic communication brings us all together and points us in the directions we need to go to get our daily fixes of this music drug.

Besides this shop, most bay area places have a specific prog section somewhere in the store...I guess I'm lucky to live in such an area of high concentration of this stuff. I've even gotten together with another rattler from Northern Cal who I met thru these pages.

Lastly, I would like to mention that since late '98 I have been stocking up on and enjoying immensely Fred Frith and his numerous projects worldwide. Of particular interest is the Chris Cutler/Fred Frith live stuff, stuff with Henry Kaiser(instrumental), 'Eye To Ear' CD(phenomenal), FF/Jean-Pierre Drouet Live CD and two Massacre releases in addition to the ESD stuff. Breathtaking material and the best part is that there is more to get (Any cross links to this type of style would be appreciated). There are a couple more with Tim Hodgkinson/other guitar players and maybe a few more with Cutler that are out there so the road goes forever on I guess.

Take it slow and enjoy,
dv

This one's about the possibility of having some or just one gig in Montreal or Quebec City someday.  I saw Gong about two years ago in Quebec City and it was absolutely, incredibly, better then any show I've ever saw.  In fact, I wrote this letter because I always look at calendar and it seems that there is no chance to see any Canterbury associated bands for a while.  So, I though this one could be read by Canterbury musicians and maybe influenced them to come in upper North America to play while going to the States.  There's a lot of Canterbury fans down here and we always have to see stupid concerts commercially successful with non-bright 4/4 rythm.  In fact, I don't go at that kind of expansive shows.  I hope someone (Canterbury musician or band) will have pity after reading this and will decide to come to Montreal or Quebec City someday.  It will sure be an intellectual success here...if we take exemple of the last Gong show in Quebec City.

Thank you.  (Excuse me for english writing mistakes, I'm not used to it!)

Spiritually and intelectually involved in Canterbury music style...

Marc-André.

Subject: Steve Hillage as Producer
Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 06:31:43 -0800 (PST)

'Allo Aymeric,

Just rattlin' in with another entry for the fella who wished to know more about the production activities of Steve Hillage.

Circa 1978-79 Hillage produced the album "Children of the Night" by Toronto space-rock veteran Nash the Slash, co-founder of the Canadian group FM.

The album is a One-man effort, with Nash playing all the parts: keyboards/synths, electronic percussion, electric & acoustic violins and mandolins, and vocals.

There are excellent renditions of:
1) The Jan & Dean hit of yesteryear, "Dead Man's Curve";
2) A section from Prokofiev's "Peter & the Wolf" entitled "Wolf"; and
3) A hilarious rendition of Deep Purple's anthem "Smoke on the Water" entitled "Dopes on the Water."

The originals are great too, with "Metropolis" and the title track standing out as classic Nash; He was still performing them live when I last seen him  in February of 1997... for more information, there is a Nash the Slash website; I'm afraid I don't know the URL offhand.

Although Hillage produced music that WR readers may find boring and/or irritating, "Children of the Night" isn't one of them!! Sadly, this album hasn't been issued on CD, and, according to Nash, it's the only one of his releases that he doesn't own the rights to...start pawing through those used vinyl bins WR readers!!! 'Bye for now,

Mike Rae

There's some old half-crazed, half-scottish git here who calls himself "DIGGER"  who insists on boring me with his long stories of when he used to knock around with all these chaps from the soft machine in the 60's :)

And i'm wonderin' if it might just be possible to put them back in contact with each other... (and then he can bore the pants off of them instead? :)

Would you happen to know how to go about contacting them (or any of the old members of the band) with a view to putting them back in contact again with their old mate DIGGER?

From what he tells me, they're sure to remember him :) - like when he used to do yoga on top of the wardrobe (or something???:) - also, he used to paint with bright watercolours (and still does... they're not bad actually:)

I know old Digger would love to hear from the lads again (it might cheer him up abit? :) - or if you know of a contact address for any of them (or forwarding address would do...) i would be most grateful...

Many regards - from Digger's friend...
Brian
