Speaking of ripping off music, I was wondering if there was any legal action taken regarding the songs "Day's Eye" by Soft Machine (Seven--1973) and "Argen's Bag" by John McLaughlin (Extrapolation--1969).

As they are, frankly, the same song... and yet the Seven liner notes claim that Ratledge composed "Day's Eye."

Thanks.

One thing he was involved in was System 7, a collaboration with the Orb and other musicians, including Miquette Giraudy. I have their first album (1991) and it is really good though it maybe a bit techno for you. If you like Orb then you should like it.

Hillage produced a band called Blink, kinda trip-hoppy alternative stuff. I paid $1 for it used. Upon listening to it I decided I'd overpaid-- it's actually a pretty stupid record, I'm afraid.

Jon Maggers remembers Henry Cow touring with Captain Beefheart. I have a press packet Henry Cow prepared when they merged with Slapp Happy, where they include histories of the two bands. The Beefheart tour is referred to as "a grim, awful WARNING" (emphasis theirs). Apparently Beefheart used to walk off the stage muttering, "That was the worst gig I ever played-- and they loved it!" I saw Beefheart here in the States at about the same time, and yeah, that version of the Magic Band had precious little magic to it.

On what do you base your assertion?
I also have this disreputable piece of crap and I can hear no obvious
Canterburisms. Not that that is in any way proof of anything BUT... I was able to ask Richard Sinclair about it, and according to him - it is
entirely bogus. Further, a friend of mine was able to ask Pye Hastings about it - and he agrees with Richard. I think that that should settle the issue.

So what have we learned from this : first of all, ANY bootleg is a rip-off of both the artist (who sees nothing from the sale of this sub-standard material) and the buyer (who over-pays for this sub-standard material), and secondly, you may not even be getting what you _think_ you are buying. (personally, if i could find the person responsible for this particular boot, i would give him a "boot" that he would not soon forget!)

thank you for your time and attention.

Bonjour all...

Other than his recent records with System 7, the only production credit of his that I can think of off the top of my head is Still by Tony Banks (the Genesis keyboardist). I will refrain from editorial comments on that opus, because for the most part, on this list, never is heard a discouraging word... and the skies are not cloudy all daaaayyy....

I hear Hillage also worked with The Orb. For further details point your browser at this relatively old doc:

gopher://wiretap.spies.com/00/Library/Music/Disc/hillage.dis

NB: I imagine they're probably called System 7 in most/all of Europe; my understanding is that they're called something different here in the States, probably thanks to Apple Computer threatening to sue the piss out of them.

HTH, ciao bella,

Rick

Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 19:29:41 +0000

If you find anything on Assagai I will pass it onto Louis Moholo if he is in London

I have a tape of something by George ?????? who was with McGregor at one time, he was from Zim, a tenor player. Some of the Casualty Ward chaps, also recorded this.

We all, Louis, Dudu and George, did an Anti Apartheid gig together in Isleworth in the rain. A place where the neonazi right wing was making a push. The National Front turned up and started to fuss, but the poo--lice closed'em down.

Strange feeling to be playing jazz with S Africans and at the same time pick up racist flak from the Little Englishers. I brought that together, not the rain, not the NF, nor the poo--lice, just the gig..

But the "afters" was the best thing.. The same rainy day as one of my exs and I eer, got together.

(Love those long nights of early day bliss don't you? ;-)

At that time, similarly to all musicians, all journalistas needed a special visa. So, as there was no way she could tell the minority government MFs for whom she was working...  Things can get a little over secretive.. Otherwise if caught,  it could have been a swift bullet job..  And bye bye love.

And as this beautiful creature was to be the first member of the Anti Apartheid news team to go underground in S Africa.

Ha!!!  Serious people for serious music huh?

Anyone want to volunteer to "on-line" for Mihra?  ;-)
