Whitehead, who had first replaced Brian Smith on a tour in
1977, came into the band permanently in 1982 when Brian
returned to his native New Zealand; at that point the rhythm
section featured Chucho Merchan on bass and Nic France on
drums, but when they decided to go to Spain to play a gig
instead of accompanying Ian on a visit to Italy where he was
to receive an award, Carr fired them and brought in the band's
original drummer John Marshall, plus bassist Joe Hubbard;
Whitehead was not happy about Ian's decision to fire the
others, and shortly thereafter he also left, to be replaced by
Phil Todd
